“We want to make exciting and delightful wines that are connected to the land where they are made, where the cold weather, the rain, the volcanic rock, and the character of the people of Traiguén is reflected in fine, pure, and austere wines with excellent aging potential.” Francisco Baettig y Carlos de Carlos
Origin
Our great-grandparents migrated from Switzerland to Chile in the late 19th century and settled on the lands around Traiguén and Purén, where they set to work, farming in an area of volcanoes, lakes, native forests, and abundant rainfall. And their families grew, surrounded by cattle, horses and wheat fields.
Now, more than a century later, our love for this land and our passion for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir led us to dream of making our own wine.
After studying the soil and climate in Traiguén for several years, we chose a plateau with volcanic soil between the Quino and Traiguén Rivers and planted it in 2013, turning our dream into reality with the founding of Viñedos Los Suizos.

Vineyard
Our vineyard is located 3.5 km from the city of Traiguén, on Route 76 South - La Esperanza. The soils are of volcanic origin, and we planted the vineyard to French clones of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir without any form of artificial irrigation.
Climate:
Located on the 38th parallel south, Viñedos Los Suizos has a Mediterranean climate with a temperate summer, a fairly short dry period (2–3 months), and a cold, rainy winter. The abundant average rainfall (1,084 mm) allows us to dry farm the vineyards, while the low temperatures (heat summation of 1,200 degree days) and low solar radiation (sunlight) encourage the grapes to ripen evenly, resulting in wines with moderate alcohol levels and excellent acidity, color, and fruit intensity.

The vineyard soils were formed 2–5 million years ago by the weathering of pyroclastic andesitic volcanic breccia during the Pleistocene. Originated from the slow transformation of the minerals from the matrix (lava) of the volcanic breccia into clay, while the rocks (clasts) from the breccia remain intact at depth.
Varieties: Viñedo Los Suizos sits atop a 22-hectare plateau planted to 9 hectares of Pinot Noir and 6.4 hectares of Chardonnay, both from French clonal material, mostly on rootstock. The vineyard is dry farmed, and weeds are controlled manually and mechanically.

Wines
Winemaking philosophy.
Vinos Baettig makes handcrafted wines with minimal intervention to achieve the maximum expression of place. Fine, pure wines with a sense of origin.
We harvest the grapes at just the right time, ferment with wild yeasts, apply delicate extractions, and use oak in moderation, all as part of our commitment to making wines with the highest quality and the greatest expression of Viñedos Los Suizos.
Selección de Parcelas - Los Primos
« Wines that seek to excite with their expression of elegance and complexity. »
The Pinot Noir comes exclusively from a selection of the El Primo, Chuir, and La Cuñada parcels, which deliver elegant and austere wines with good aging potential. The Chardonnay comes from a selection of the Triángulo and Llaima parcels, which deliver vertical and mineral wines with good tension. The name Los Primos (the cousins) refers to the closeness of style and quality of the vineyard parcels that give rise to this wine. The first vintage of Selección de Parcelas (selection of parcels) was the 2016, made from the first experimental harvest from Vinedo Los Suizos, three years after plantingVino de Viñedo - Los Parientes
« Wines that aim to enchant with their freshness and intensity. »
These wines come from from a combination of parcels at Viñedo Los Suizos that deliver lively and juicy wines with tremendous fruit intensity. Los Parientes (the relatives) refers to the closeness of the different components within the same vineyard. The first vintage of Vino de Viñedo (wine from the vineyard) was the 2019, with Los Parientes Pinot Noir and Los Parientes Chardonnay.Wines

Cold spring and warm summer season that delivered wines of great depth and complexity. Rainy and cold spring resulted in somewhat late budding and flowering, while yield was affected by October frosts. However, conditions changed abruptly in January, registering a dry and hot summer, which allowed the grapes to advance in their maturity to be harvested during the first two weeks of April, delivering wine of great concentration, ageing potential and fruit intensity. An excellent vintage. Bright yellow colour. Aromatic and highly complex with notes of pear, nougat, acacia, apricot, honey, wax and hints of dried fruits such as walnuts, hazelnuts and cashew. It is deep and full in mouth with a creamy texture and notes of apple, passion fruit, honey, hay and spices. The body and density are harmoniously balanced by the acidity, giving a deep, fresh, lively and tense wine, with a long finish and great aging potential.Vinification:
- Vinification: 100% whole cluster pressed, 24 hrs cold settling, barrel fermented with native yeasts.
- Aging: 16 months in French barrels. 38% new (400L)

Vintage 2018
A cool season that resulted in a long and even ripening of the grapes that produced exceptionally elegant wines. Linear, deep wines with excellent aging potential. The abundant winter rains encouraged an excellent bud break in the spring. Moderate rainfall in October and November allowed good vegetative development, and the hot, dry conditions in December aided good fruit set, thereby ensuring excellent production. The scant but welcome rain in January allowed the vineyards to reach their optimum growth, while sporadic rains in February moderated the summer temperatures. A cool and rainy March slowed the progress of ripening and forced us to wait patiently until mid-April to harvest the grapes, which were kept very healthy thanks to the cold and windy conditions. Bright yellow in color and very complex on the nose, with aromas of citrus fruits, orange blossoms, honeysuckle, acacia flowers, pears, white peaches, and a light touch of walnuts, almonds, and fine pastries such as gingerbread. The palate is vertical, dry, and crisp, with citrusy notes of tangerines and fine hints of nuts. It has great energy and precision, but above all it stands out for its mineral texture and depth. A cold vintage with outstanding aging potential.Vinification:
- Hand harvested
- 100% whole bunch pressed
- Wild fermentation in French oak
- 12 months of aging. 26% in new French oak of 400 liters barrels
- Harvest date: 23rd of April
- Production: 1.512 bottles

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Luis Gutierrez – 31st Aug 2021
—“The Baettig wines are a noteworthy addition to Chile’s top wines. They are produced in an artisanal and manual way from one of the cooler terroirs in Chile. All destined to achieve the expression of the place rather than the hand of the winemaker. Vibrant, precise and symmetric”
Swiss in the South
The focus is on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and the varieties seem to adapt quite well to this cooler part of the country. Vinos Baettig has been a breakthrough for the D.O. Traiguén of Malleco Valley, where they planted their vineyards in 2013.
They started small and slow and making a little more wine every year. They produced 55,000 bottles in 2021, and the absolute maximum will be 90,000 bottles, which is the potential of their Los Suizos (the Swiss) vineyard.

Wine reviews:
2019 Baettig Selección de Parcelas Los Primos Chardonnay – 96 pts RP
This is super austere, shy and closed, with subtle complexity, not very varietal, more about the soils and the cooler place. 2019 was not a large crop, and the wines have good concentration, a good year in the south. It has good depth, pungent flavors and some nutty, wax and acacia notes, not exuberant or explosive, but elegant and with density and more weight than the 2018, which gives it more depth and layers. This is superb, very complete. 2,900 bottles were filled in September 2020.
2019 Baettig Selección de Parcelas Los Primos Pinot Noir – 95 pts RP
I love the elegant and complex nose that goes beyond the fruit and flowers, and it has nuance and detail, notes of iron and iodine and soy sauce à la Romanée-St-Vivant. This is more discreet and shy than Los Parientes, more austere and elegant. The palate is superb, ethereal with super fine tannins and vibrant acidity. There is great purity, and it’s super clean and precise. 3,456 bottles were filled in July 2020.
2020 Baettig Vino de Vinedos Los Parientes Chardonnay – 93 pts RP
This is subtle, elegant and varietal, with purity and in the house style of balance and harmony. The wine is clean and precise, with floral and citrus notes, transparent, with unnoticeable oak and great freshness. 15,420 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2021.
2020 Baettig Vino de Vinedo Los Parientes Pinot Noir – 92 pts RP
It’s quite complex, with notes of rose hip and red berries and a hint of blood and iron. It has a soft palate with some earthy tannins, juicy acidity and some spiciness. 15,180 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2021.

Vinous: A stylistic journey from the Andes to the Coastal Ridge

–“There is a tendency to plant Chardonnay further south, resulting in wines that seem to come from another planet. The 2019 Baettig Chardonnay Selección de Parcelas Los Primos is a good example: “What interests me about the area,” Baettig said, “is the heightened acidity and aromatic profile I get at low alcohol levels.” His wines leave behind a trail of tension that is the stuff of drinkers’ dreams”.

2019 Baettig Selección de Parcelas Los Primos Chardonnay, D.O. Traiguén – 95 pts Vinous
The 2019 Chardonnay Baettig Selección de Parcelas Los Primos hails from D.O. Traiguén, Malleco Valley, and was aged for 16 months in 400-liter French barrels, 38% new. Attractive bright yellow in color. The core of the complex, enticing nose consists of ginger, lemon peel and green apple plus hints of nougat, acacia and hazelnut. In the mouth, it is both silky and elegant, with a vibrant acidity that channels the palate and elongates the delicate finish. A masterfully made wine from Francisco Baettig.
2019 Baettig Selección de Parcelas Los Primos Pinot Noir, D.O. Traiguén – 94 pts Vinous
The 2019 Pinot Noir Baettig Selección de Parcelas Los Primos comes from D.O. Traiguen, Malleco Valley and was aged for 15 months in 20% new French barrels. This is a textbook Pinot Noir. Cherry-red with a nose of allspice, blood and damp earth; enticing mushroomy notes appear after a while. The palate is compact with very fine-grained, polished tannins and a freshness that brings tension and energy, while the finish lingers at length.

La CAV 2021
Only four wines. Two chardonnay and two pinot noir. Labels reminiscent of small and renowned French producers. The terroir at the center of them and a surname that knows how to make great wines.
Vinos Baettig is far from being just Francisco Baettig. The man behind Errazuriz, Vinedo Chadwick and Sena wines for more than 15 years has been working with this project for more than a decade together with his partner Carlos de Carlos, a very recognized name not only in Chile but also in many international markets such as Asia and UK. Together they planned the launch of their brand for this 2020 without considering a pandemic or social outbreak.
What could have been a complete failure today is our Best New Winery 2021 with general applause. Wines with enormous personality that speak in an elegant and personal way of a terroir called Traiguén – rainy and with volcanic soil – that has become a star for chardonnay and pinot noir.
We will have to see how the short but intense story of Vinos Baettig continues. It had a great start and we are sure is called to become the protagonist of the new Chile !.
